Archeological Reserve – The Rock Churches of Ivanovo

St. Archangel Michael Rock Monastery is situated near the village of Ivanovo, 20 km south from Russe. It consists of dozens of premises hewn into the rock along the Valley of Russenski Lom River and is one of the biggest and best preserved Bulgarian rock monasteries.
Frescoes from XIII and XIV century are preserved in six of the monastery’s churches and chapels an are inscribed in the UNESCO’s list of world cultural and historic heritage due to their high qualities. The most famous among them are those in St. Virgin Mary church, drawn in the middle of XIV century after a donation by the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander. These wall-painting mark one of the heights of Bulgarian Medieval art.
